Take A Tour Of Elder Mumford's Japan Apartment
It is a Japanese custom to remove your shoes in the entry way, before entering a home. You also say "Shitsurei shimasu" which means "Excuse me, I am about to disturb you now by entering".
And here is the kitchen. (Click on any image to enlarge)
Bedroom- Futons on tatami mats. The beds are easy to make. Just fold everything into thirds, and you're done!
Closet with drawers for storage.
Bathroom/Laundry Room. (They have a small clothes washer, but no dryer. Clothes are hung to dry outside.)
Japanese toilets are famous for having many options for different types of washing and drying.
View from 4th floor apartment window. (Laundry hanging to dry just outside the window.)

What a normal looking apartment. I'm sure that is reassuring to your mother!
